The LAB - the hi-tech shop of a 6000 person account with Deutsche Bank - was expanding from its base in London to Frankfurt following the successful win of a complex asset management project for the investment bank. The role had a number of challenges. First, it was remote with little supervision available from HQ. Second, the culture was different. Third, the client was rightly demanding of high quality which was something we could control locally, but a new environment in a new city meant little control. Finally, the project was of huge importance to the bank being regulatory in nature.

I’d like to think it was intelligent hiring on our part but in reality, we were exceptionally lucky finding David to move Germany and be the lead architect for the programme. He was able to bring the quality we needed as if Frankfurt was an extended part of the LAB, was able to provide the right responses to the client with appropriate negotiation and land the project – late! By 15 minutes anyway. It was within acceptable parameters as it did have over 200 screens and a large legacy migration requirement.

Once his role had naturally concluded in Germany, and with a team of around 50 people thanks to his ability to hire good people, he helped form a new programme in London directly with the business to prepare it for success. This included API design, architectural deliverables and client management in transaction banking. We were sorry to see him move on but was completely understandable as his career progresses.

David worked for me at Labs in Truphone from 2013-2015. I was tasked with setting up an Innovation team within Truphone, which by that time had become over 1500 employees and had adopted enterprise processes in the operation of its core business. It recognized it was no longer geared up for innovation but understood the importance of it. David was the first hire in a team that led our Web front-end communication services. We were experimenting with producing telecommunications services being delivered via Web, adopting open standards and protocols.

David understood the mission statement and was able to manage up and down the chain, assisting me in building and operating the Web team. He filled in as Product Owner for projects where there weren’t any, and build team processes that delivered an efficient build-measure-learn loop. Whilst extremely capable in a technical capacity, he had a great ability to communicate with stakeholders from across the business, and his documentation skills were equally excellent.

I would happily recommend him in either a technical capacity, as a Solutions Architect, or as someone that could lead building a team within a larger enterprise for innovation and rapid product/business transformation.
